Privacy is paramount
As any self-respecting multimillionaire looking for an exclusive hideaway will tell you, in addition to desiring a luxury home, privacy and security are equally highly prized. La Zagaleta delivers on all three counts. The tight securing and secrecy add a delicious air of mystery to the area, further enticing the wealthy, the great and the good.
Celebs who want to be seen head to Puerto Banús but those who want to enjoy the all the benefits of the Marbella lifestyle without being seen by the paparazzi head inland to La Zagaleta, located just above Marbella in the Municipality of Benahavís. Most recently, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie were reported to be holidaying in the rarefied La Zagaleta environment.
So, what is La Zagaleta?
La Zagaleta can be described as a residential private resort and country club, where luxury mansions and private estates nestle amongst undulating hills and valley, surrounded by forests and wildlife. Yet, just a few minutes’ drive from Marbella and the neighbouring towns and beaches.
Within the confines of these super private development members have access to everything they could desire, from helipads to an equestrian centre, hiking trails, tennis courts and two private golf club, known as the Old Course and New Course. The Old Course Clubhouse interior alone spans 5,000m², providing bars, lounges, terraces, events and hospitality rooms and a gourmet restaurant.
Colourful history
Adding to the mystique, La Zagaleta has a very colourful history. The land covering 900 hectares was formerly owned by the disgraced arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi who used it for hunting until it was embargoed by the US government. In 1990, it was acquired by a consortium led by former financier, the late Enrique Pérez Flores (died in 2020) for 36€ million.
Limited development
The original plan was to develop up to 3,000 homes, this was later reduced to a maximum of 420 with enormous 25.000m² plots supported by high-end amenities exclusive for members (residents). Today the company is managed Enrique’s son, Ignacio Pérez Díaz, who is the Executive President and there are still only around 230 villas surrounded by lush forests and wildlife, such as deer and wild boars.
Statistics provided by Spainhouses.net the average price per square metre of land in La Zagaleta is 6,299€ and the average property price is 7,319, 071€, based on 28 properties on 16th February 2022.
