So, it won’t surprise you that Marbella was voted to be the second ‘Best European Destination’ in an annual poll (2022) carried out by a leading Belgian tourist website. It was a closely run race, with epicentre of real estate luxury finishing hot on the heels of the Slovenian holiday destination of Ljublijana.
Mediterranean must-do destination
Marbella’s Tourist Board prepared a strong campaign and was keen to win the award for the region. They can rest assured that anyone who is familiar with this perennially popular jewel on the Costa del Sol, will already know that the city has much to offer.
Since the 1950s, when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe launched the Marbella Club Hotel and changed Marbella from a small fishing village into a magnet for the glitterati, the desire to see and be seen in Marbella has never waned. Year after year, the demand for luxury villas for sale in Marbella by far outstrips the supply.
First choice above major capital cities
Although Marbella was pipped to the post for first place, the Costa del Sol’s most famous city fought off some stiff competition. Ranking second with an impressive 61,401 votes, Marbella was placed above established international destinations Marbella received an impressive. The purpose of the poll was to identify Europe’s most visited city. The research was conducted on behalf of www.europeanbestdestinations.com taking into account the views of over half a million participants across 182 countries around the world.
The Mayoress of Marbella Angeles Muñoz, was proud of the municipality’s enduring appeal, stating that the Costa del Sol is the most popular destination by tourists from the UK, even above their own capital city of London.
Consistently high levels of tourism
Winning the poll would have generated invaluable PR opportunities in the global press to promote Marbella on the world-stage. This type of publicity can significantly increase tourism figures. The good news is, that although Marbella didn’t win the prize, this beautiful cosmopolitan city is considered a dream destination and consistently draws millions of visitors to its shores. In 2021, Marbella saw a total of 87,466 tourists (51,443 foreigners and 36,023 Spaniards) in August. This is just under 2,000 fewer than in 2019 prior to the pandemic.
